This is a list of Birmingham homicides by year, giving the number of reported homicides within the city limits. The numbers in parentheses are the homicide rate per 100,000 residents.

This list is incomplete. It is based on reported cases that have reached our editors' attention. Additional reported cases will be added as they are brought to light. The degree to which under-reporting in different eras and different contexts may affect these lists is difficult to gauge.

Notes

  1. A total of 148 homicides were recorded in 1992, of which seven were ruled justifiable, leaving 141 chargeable homicides on the books - a record high for recent years. The Birmingham News shows 133 homicides in 1992 versus 139 in 1991, making that the city's deadliest recent year by their reckoning.
  2. A 2007 UAB study found that the percentage of victims seriously injured by violence who survived their injuries increased from 24% to 41% between 1997 and 2007. Of 2,318 people brought to UAB Hospital's trauma center over those years, 2,211 survived. (Meaning that 107 homicide victims died at UAB Hospital during those 10 years.)
  3. Dr Jeffrey Kirby, director of acute care surgery at UAB, claimed his department treated 697 gunshot wound victims in 2018, with only 7 patients dying (a survival rate of 90.7%).
