This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2023. It includes homicide cases occurring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.

150 homicides were reported during the year. Based on the 2022 census estimate of 196,910 population, that represents a homicide rate of 76.2 homicides per 100,000 residents. Birmingham had 153 homicides in 2022, a record high. The recent record low of 62 homicides was set in 2014.

The city averaged 12.5 homicides per month, or one every 2.4 days. There were 12 incidents in January, 3 in February, 16 in March, 14 in April, 14 in May and 13 in June, 16 in July, 10 in August, 11 in September, 14 in October, 12 in November and 14 in December. The longest stretches without a homicide were the 13-day spans between February 22 and March 7, and between September 4 and 17. 25 deaths were reported on Sundays, 22 on Mondays, 22 on Tuesdays, 18 on Wednesdays, 18 on Thursdays, 17 on Fridays, and 30 on Saturdays.

10 of the reported homicides were ruled justifiable as self-defense by investigators or prosecutors, 2 were presumed to have been accidental, and 1 more was a police shooting presumed to have been justified. 1 death was caused by a crime caused in a previous year. With the exception of those cases, and at least 6 which were charged as manslaughter, the department acknowledged 126 chargeable murders. Suspects have been identified in 59 cases, arrested in 59 and charged in 53. At the end of the year, the department considered 48 murder cases closed, leaving 78 cases unsolved. Two suspects died by suicide without being charged. A Conviction has been obtained in 1 case, by blind plea.

At least 134 deaths resulted from shootings, 12 from reckless driving, 1 from blunt-force trauma, 1 from child abuse, and 2 from unannounced causes. 16 incidents occurred outside at apartment complexes, 33 at private homes, 21 at businesses, 1 at a park, 1 at an abandoned building, and 73 on the streets. At least 51 deaths were reported in the West Precinct, 22 in the East Precinct, 15 in the South Precinct and 30 in the North Precinct.

2 killings arose from work-related disputes, 5 came during robberies, 15 were domestic-related disputes, 19 resulted from arguments between acquaintances, 43 appeared to have been targeted assaults, 1 was caused by child abuse, 1 began as a dispute over a restaurant bill, 1 victim was struck by return fire during an assault and 2 by stray bullets during disputes. 12 deaths were caused by reckless driving, 2 from recklessly leaving firearms in reach of unattended toddlers, and 1 resulted from a police shooting. The motives for 46 other deaths have not been made public.
