Amazon
Amazon is an e-commerce conglomerate founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos and headquartered in Seattle, Washington. The current CEO is Andy Jassy.
Amazon operates several facilities in the Birmingham area:
- Bessemer Amazon Fulfillment Center (BHM1, originally referred to as "Project Bluebird"), an 850,000 square-foot warehouse and fulfillment center constructed for $325 million in 2020 at 975 Powder Plant Road in Bessemer.
- North Birmingham Amazon Distribution Center (DBM2), a temporary distribution hub operated between 2018 and 2021 by Amazon Logistics at 2601 27th Street North in North Birmingham.
- Hooper City Amazon Distribution Center (also DBM2?), a 96,770 square-foot office/warehouse and delivery center building that is planned for a 30-acre site at 225 Daniel Payne Drive in Hooper City
- Acipco-Finley Amazon Distribution Center (HBM1), a 46,200 square-foot delivery center at the former Dixieland Produce site at 2501 3rd Place West, adjoining the Birmingham Food Terminal in Acipco-Finley
- Bessemer Amazon Distribution Center (DBM6), an announced 112,000 square-foot center, developed by Ryan Cos. US Inc. of Minneapolis, Minnesota on a 42.4-acre site at 4201 Lakeshore Parkway, near John Hawkins Parkway in Bessemer
- Eastwood Amazon Distribution Center (originally referred to as "Project Magic"), a 201,475 square-foot delivery center developed by Stonemont Financial Group of Atlanta, Georgia on the site of the former Century Plaza shopping mall at the intersection of Crestwood Boulevard and Oporto-Madrid Boulevard in Eastwood. The facility replaced the North Birmingham Amazon Distribution Center.
In 2017, Amazon announced a nationwide search for a second corporate headquarters. Local politicians and economic development agencies partnered in an unsuccessful "Bring A to B" campaign to market Birmingham as a potential candidate. Birmingham was not among the 20 announced finalists, and Arlington, Virginia was eventually selected as the site for "HQ2". Amazon had been developing a 278,400-square-foot sorting facility, referred to as "Project Church", for a 50-acre site adjoining its Bessemer fulfillment center. The company withdrew its permit applications in 2021. Amazon is also the owner of Whole Foods Market, with Birmingham area locations.
