Wendy's is a chain of fast food restaurants founded in 1969 in Columbus, Ohio by Dave Thomas, and named for his daughter, Melinda ("Wenda"). The business maintains a local corporate office at 400 Century Park South in Hoover. Another franchiser, Stanley Rubinstein's BSD Foods, has offices in the Garvin Building at 3900 Montclair Road.

In September 1978 the U.S. Department of Labor filed a lawsuit against five Wendy's restaurants in Birmingham, claiming that they required employees to work more than 40 hours per week without paying overtime, and that they failed to keep up-to-date wage and hour records as required under the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938.

In 2009 Wendy's merged with Arby's

In 2012 Cullman native and Birmingham-Southern College graduate Morgan Smith was cast as the brand's national spokesperson in a campaign that continued through 2016.
