Revision as of 15:08, 10 July 2022
The track speed skating competition at the 2022 World Games took place on July 8 and July 9 at the temporary track constructed at the Powell Steam Plant. Speed skating has been an event since the inaugural 1981 World Games in Santa Clara, California, and the Birmingham edition marked the eleventh time track speed skating was included as a regular event at the World Games. Speed skating is the roller sport of racing on inline skates, and although it primarily evolved from racing on traditional roller skates, the sport is similar enough to ice speed skating that many competitors are known to switch between inline and ice speed skating according to the season.
Track speed skating was originally to be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex, but in February 2022 it was announced the competition would instead be held at the Powell Steam Plant. The temporary, 200 meter track was constructed in the parking lot adjacent to the Steam Plant from May-June 2022. The track had a width of six meters with a slope that did not exceed one percent. It was constructed on an asphalt base and topped with the synthetic resin called Vesmaco.
