Ninth Avenue South is a largely discontinuous east-west avenue through Birmingham's Southside community, primarily the UAB campus. Additional sections exist to the east as residential streets in the Red Mountain, Woodlawn, and Crestwood communities.

The westernmost portion of the road is a two-block section between 6th Street and 8th Street South, just south of Interstate 65. The road is then interrupted by various UAB athletic fields and some "superblocks" on campus before resuming as a dead end stub east of the UAB Campus Green and west of 16th Street South, between the UAB Campus Recreation Center and The Commons on the Green. It continues from there to 20th Street South where the road continues east as 8th Court South, but 9th Avenue crosses between 20th and Richard Arrington Boulevard (21st Street South) approximately 300 feet south. The road then moves back north approximately 150 feet from Richard Arrington to 23rd Street South. It then shifts another approximately 150 feet north to run through Southtown Court before ending at the Elton B. Stephens Expressway right of way.

The two blocks between 20th and 22nd Streets were known as Quinlan Avenue for a time.
