2020 Birmingham homicides
This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2020. It includes homicide cases occurring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.
20 homicides have been reported in the city as of March 9, putting the city on pace for 106 for the year. Based on the 2018 census estimate of 209,880 population, that represents a homicide rate of 50.5 homicides per 100,000 residents. Birmingham had 110 homicides in 2019. The recent record low of 62 homicides was set in 2014, and the recent record high was 141 in 1992. At this point last year, 21 homicides had been reported.
The city has averaged 8.7 homicides per month, or one every 3.5 days. There were 10 incidents in January, 6 in February, and 4 so far in March. The longest stretches without a homicide were the 8-day spans between December 28 and January 5; and between February 16 and 24. 6 deaths were reported on Sundays, 3 on Mondays, 3 on Tuesdays, 3 on Wednesdays, 3 on Thursdays, 2 on Fridays, and 0 on Saturdays.
3 of the reported homicides were ruled justifiable as self-defense by investigators or prosecutors.The police department therefore acknowledges 17 chargeable homicides, 1 of which was charged as manslaughter. Suspects have been identified in 6 cases, arrested in 4 and charged in 4.
18 deaths so far have resulted from shootings and 2 from stabbing. Seven incidents occurred at private homes, 2 at apartment complexes, 1 at a private club, 3 at businesses, and 6 on the streets. 8 were reported in the West Precinct, 7 in the East Precinct, 2 in the South Precinct and 3 in the North Precinct.
One death resulted from a planned ambush, one took place during a robbery, and 9 occurred following sudden disputes. The motive is unknown in 9 other deaths.

- January 5: Stacey Flournoy, 32, died at UAB Hospital after being found with a gunshot wound on the porch of a home at 3838 39th Court North in Inglenook. No arrest. (report)
- January 6: Douglas Paige, 34, was shot to death in a car following an altercation on the 4400 block of 9th Avenue North in Kingston. Corderious Scroggins and Clarence Scroggins were arrested in February and charged with capital murder. (report)
- January 8: Tristian Jackson, 36, a U.S. Army sergeant, was shot to death in an apparent ambush at the home of a relative on the 300 block of Killough Springs Road in Killough Springs. No arrest. (report)
- January 13: David Franklin Lee Jr, 37, was shot to death during an altercation at the Showstoppers Motorcycle Club at 901 Coosa Street. Investigators concluded that the fatal shot was fired in self-defense and the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the shooting justifiable. (report)
- January 15: Kyre Robinson, 26, was shot to death in his apartment on the 4200 block of 5th Avenue South in Forest Park-South Avondale. No arrest. (report)
- January 19: Troy Allen Underhill, 48, was found shot to death in a wooded area near the Shell Food Mart at 3901 Pinson Valley Parkway in Echo Highlands. Another person was injured in an altercation and transported to a hospital. The shooting was ruled justifiable and no criminal charges were filed. (report)
- January 21: De'Runnya Wilson, 25, was found shot to death at his home on Northland Avenue Southwest in Mason City. No arrest. (report)
- January 26: Deshandra Lashode Bell, 25, died at UAB Hospital from a gunshot wound suffered near the 1600 block of Pearson Avenue Southwest in Oakwood Place. No arrest. (report)
- January 28: James Rashad Brown, 23, died at UAB Hospital from a gunshot wound suffered during an altercation the previous evening which took place in the parking lot of the Goldwire Place Apartments on the 600 block of Goldwire Place in South Titusville. Marcus Earl Harris was arrested and charged with manslaughter. (report)
- January 31: Tyrese LeRichard Morrow, 26, was shot to death on the 900 block of 24th Street South in the Southtown Court public housing project. A second person was taken to UAB Highlands with gunshot wounds. Juanderius Mar'Quez Woods was arrested and charged with attempted murder and capital murder. (report)
- February 6: Devonta Reddick, 27, was found shot to death in the front yard of a home at 1148 Dogwood Lane in Killough Springs. Another person injured by gunfire was taken to UAB Hospital. No arrest. (report)
- February 6: Aaron Romel Johnson, 18, was found shot to death outside a home on the 2300 block of 27th Street Ensley, near McMahon Park in Ensley Highlands. No arrest. (report)
- February 6: Bobby George Mayweather, 69, was found dead from a stab wound in his apartment in the Bankhead Towers at 2300 5th Avenue North in the Central City neighborhood. Investigators determined that he was killed in self-defense by a romantic partner and no charges were brought. (report)
- February 12: Travars Montez Wages Jr, 21, died at UAB Hospital from gunshot wounds suffered on January 30 just outside the Wages Event Center at 2726 Pearson Avenue Southwest. Lathedrick Miles was arrested more than a week later and charged with murder. (report)
- February 16: Jakhi Jabrrea Johnny Young, 16, was shot to death during an apparent robbery attempt outside the The Palace gentlemen's club at 610 3rd Avenue West in Graymont. No arrest. (report)
- February 28: Jerrell Moultrie, 28, was found shot to death at 43rd Street North and 12th Court North in Kingston. No arrest. (report)
- March 2: Shontez Deon Rhodes, 36, was shot to death outside his disabled car near the intersection of Pike Road and 40th Street Ensley in Belview Heights. No arrest. (report)
- March 3: Gussie Lee Tyus,72, was found shot to death in the vicinity of 963 47th Street North in Kingston. No arrest. (report)
- March 8: An unnamed male, injured in a fight at 2nd Avenue North and 13th Street in Fountain Heights a week earlier, died from his wounds at UAB Hospital. No arrest. (report)
