Revision as of 09:51, 21 March 2016

This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2016. It includes homicide cases occurring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.

22 homicides have been reported in the city as of March 18, putting the city on pace for 103 for the year. Based on the 2014 census estimate of 212,247 population, that would represent 48.5 homicides per 100,000 residents. Birmingham had 96 homicides in 2015 and a record low of 62 homicides in 2014. The recent record high was 141 in 1992. At this time in 2015 there had been 20 homicides reported.

The city has averaged 8.5 homicides per month, or one every 3.5 days. There were 9 incidents in January, 6 in February, and 7 so far in March. The longest stretch without a homicide was the 14 days between January 29 and February 12. Five violent deaths were reported on Sundays, 2 on Mondays, 4 on Tuesdays, 1 on a Wednesday, 3 on Thursdays, 6 on Fridays and 1 on a Saturday.

Of the 22 reported homicides, suspects have been identified in 12 cases, apprehended in 11, and charged in 7. Two homicides were ruled justifiable by prosecutors. The police department therefore acknowledges 20 chargeable homicides, of which 20 so far have been classified as murders.

At least 15 deaths were shootings, two were caused by stab wounds, and one from strangulation. At least seven homicides took place inside homes, nine on the streets, two in yards, and three at apartment complexes. Seven were reported in the West Precinct, three in the East Precinct, one in the South Precinct and nine in the North Precinct. Three deaths were the result of domestic disputes, three others from ongoing grudges, and two others resulted from a robbery. Sixteen victims were male and six were female.
