This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2012. It includes homicide cases occuring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.

38 homicides have been reported in the city as of July 20, putting Birmingham on pace for 66 in 2012. Based on the 2012 census estimate of 206,926 population, that represents 31.9 homicides per 100,000 population for the year. Birmingham had 61 homicides in 2011, 63 in 2010, 72 in 2009, and a record of 141 in 1992. At this time in 2011 there had been 42 homicides.

Birmingham is averaging 5.5 homicides per month, or one every 5.6 days. There were 8 incidents in January, 3 in February, 5 in March, 4 in April, 3 in May, 8 in June and 7 so far in July. The longest stretch without a homicide was the 31 days between March 23 and April 23. Ten deaths were reported on Sundays, 8 on Mondays, 6 on Tuesdays, 2 on Wednesdays, 2 on Thursdays, 10 on Fridays and none on Saturdays.

Of the 38 reported homicides, suspects have been identified in 22 cases, apprehended in 22, charged in 12 and convicted in none. Five homicides were ruled justifiable by prosecutors, and 1 other, caused by reckless driving rather than malice aforethought, was charged as homicide, but not murder. Not counting those four, the police department acknowledges 32 murders in its tabulation for the year.

35 of the 38 reported homicides were shootings. Seven deaths came during robberies, 5 at altercations at places of business, 1 in a domestic dispute, and 2 others were the result of ongoing arguments. Ten incidents took place on the streets, 12 at private homes, 5 at businesses, 5 at apartment complexes, and 1 at a public park. 35 victims were males and 3 were females.
