The Holt Lock and Dam is the middle of three locks and dams on Black Warrior River between its headwaters at Bankhead Lake and the city of Tuscaloosa. Completed by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1969, it is one of two Corps dams fitted with Alabama Power hydropower turbines. Upon its completion, it replaced four older locks, some of which were removed to prevent navigation hazards during low water. It is named for the nearby Tuscaloosa County community of Holt. The lock and dam created the 3,200 acre Holt Lake.
