Revision as of 08:03, 7 April 2016

This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2016. It includes homicide cases occurring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.

26 homicides have been reported in the city as of April 6, putting the city on pace for 98 for the year. Based on the 2014 census estimate of 212,247 population, that would represent 46.2 homicides per 100,000 residents. Birmingham had 96 homicides in 2015 and a record low of 62 homicides in 2014. The recent record high was 141 in 1992. At this time in 2015 there had been 23 homicides reported.

The city has averaged 8.2 homicides per month, or one every 3.7 days. There were 9 incidents in January, 6 in February, 10 in March and 1 so far in April. The longest stretch without a homicide was the 14 days between January 29 and February 12. Five violent deaths were reported on Sundays, 4 on Mondays, 4 on Tuesdays, 2 on Wednesdays, 3 on Thursdays, 6 on Fridays and 2 on Saturdays.

Of the 26 reported homicides, suspects have been identified in 16 cases, apprehended in 14, and charged in 10. Three homicides were ruled justifiable by prosecutors. The police department therefore acknowledges 23 chargeable homicides, of which 23 so far have been classified as murders.

At least 19 deaths were shootings, two were caused by stab wounds, and one from strangulation. At least nine homicides took place inside homes, eleven on the streets, two in yards, and three at apartment complexes. Ten were reported in the West Precinct, four in the East Precinct, one in the South Precinct and nine in the North Precinct. Five deaths were the result of domestic disputes, three others from ongoing grudges, and three others resulted from robberies. Nineteen victims were male and seven were female.
