Dancesport at the 2022 World Games: Difference between revisions

The dancesport competition at the 2022 World Games took place on July 8, July 9, and July 10 under the auspices of the World DanceSport Federation. Competition in Standard, Latin, and Rock'n'Roll dancesport were held at Legacy Arena, while the the breaking competition was staged at Sloss Furnaces.

The standard and Latin dancesport competitions have been part of the World Games program since the 1997 event in Lahti, Finland. The 2022 edition marked the seventh time dancesport was included as a regular event at the World Games. Rock'n'Roll was part of the program in 2005, 2009 and 2017 before making its fourth appearance in Birmingham.

Standard dancesport includes the waltz, tango, Viennese waltz, slow foxtrot, and quickstep, generally danced in a closed position. The Latin discipline includes the samba, cha-cha-cha, rumba, paso doble, and jive, each characterized by intense expressiveness. Rock'n'roll dance is more free-form, characterized by acrobatic lifts, jumps, throws and flips.

2022 was the first year that breakdancing or breaking was added to the dancesport program, following a debut at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, and in anticipation of being part of the program at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile and at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France. Salsa dance, which appeared in the 2013 and 2017 World Games, was not part of the 2022 program.

Breakdancers ("B-boys" and "B-girls") competed head-to-head over several judged rounds.
