17th Street South is a north-south street in Birmingham's Five Points South neighborhood. The street does not cross the Railroad Reservation, and its northern terminus is a continuation of the paved "17th Street Plaza" at Railroad Park. From there, it continues south for 4 blocks, but then is closed between 5th and 10th Avenue South in the heart of the UAB Medical Center and UAB campus. From 10th, the street transitions into residential neighborhoods, including the Anderson Place Historic District, as it climbs the slope of Red Mountain ending between 15th and 16th Avenue South. The viewing corridor created by 17th Street South through Southside most closely aligns with the statue of Vulcan.
17th Street South Homewood picks up on the south side of Red Mountain in the Rosedale community, merging into Central Avenue as it crosses Griffin Brook.
