This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 1991. It includes homicide cases occuring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that not all homicides are ultimately ruled to be murder in courts of law.

1991 saw 131 homicides reported in Birmingham. Based on the 1990 census count of 265,968 residents, the homicide rate for the city was 49.2 homicides per 100,000 population for the year.

  1. January 4: Boise Perkins, 76, died at Carraway Methodist Medical Center from gunshot wounds suffered on October 23, 1990 during a fight with his son at his home. No criminal charges were filed. (report)
  2. January 5: Tamiko Jones, 20, was shot to death in an argument over a bottle of gin. Another man was seriously injured. Steven Parker pleaded guilty to manslaughter and assault. He was given a suspended sentence with 5 years on probation. (report)
  3. January 8: Eddie Waters, 64, was shot to death on the 1600 block of 18th Place North in Fountain Heights. Ricky Lee Kennedy was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  4. January 16: Bill Saxton, 24, was one of two people shot to death in the living room of their home at 1613 32nd Avenue North in Acipco-Finley. Jerry Lashen Falconer was arrested and charged with murder. (report)

  9. February 3: Terry Griffin, 29, was shot to death in his car on the 1300 block of Princeton Avenue Southwest in Arlington-West End. No arrest. (report)
  10. February 5: Alexander Holt, 24, was shot to death during an argument on the 100 block of 4th Court West in the Elyton Village public housing community in Graymont. Rodney Averhart was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. (report)
  11. February 8: Donald Ray Townsend, 37, died at University Hospital from injuries suffered the day before in a fight on the block of Dugan Avenue in North Pratt. No arrest. (report)
  12. February 10: Ryan Moultrie was found shot to death just outside his car in a parking lot on the 1000 block of Hilltop Terrace. No arrest. (report)
  13. February 17: Roderick Presswood, 24, was found shot to death on the sidewalk following an argument on the 300 block of 3rd Street West in Graymont. Andrew Carrington was convicted of murder and sentenced to 30 years in prison. (report)
  14. February 21: David L. Isbell, 42, was shot to death in an alley near the 3200 block of Hazel Avenue Southwest in Riley-Travellick. Henry Lee Toney was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  15. February 22: Alvin Purifoy, 18, was shot to death as he stepped out of convenience store in Woodlawn. James C. Ballard was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  16. February 24: Cheryl Lynn Parker, 22, was shot to death on the 1600 block of Mims Avenue Southwest in West End Manor. London England Dandridge and John Henry Melton were convicted of murder, with Melton being sentenced to 25 years in prison. (report)

  4. October 27: Sharma Ruth Johnson, 22, was shot to death at Zion Memorial Gardens in Zion City following a robbery and kidnapping which began at First Alabama Bank on Parkway East. Willie B. Smith III, Lorenzo Smith, and Angelica Willis were arrested and charged with capital murder. Willis pleaded guilty to felony murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. She testified against the Smith brothers. The younger brother was a minor at the time. Willie Smith, the shooter, admitted to shooting Johnson in a wire recording which was played for jurors. He was convicted and sentenced to death. His execution had been scheduled for February 11, 2021, but has been stayed by the 11th United States Circuit Court of Appeals. (report)
  5. December 24: A homeless male was beaten to death and another chased off a bridge where he was injured and left unconscious. Four members of a skinhead group were convicted of murder and sentenced to between 25 years and life in prison. [1]
