1974: Birmingham Americans 11 - Southern California Suns 7 in front of 53,000 at their first game at Legion Field.
1964: The City of Pelham was incorporated.
1943: The USS Birmingham provided long-range gunfire support during the U. S. Marines' invasion of Sicily.
1877: Physician and Civitan International founder Courtney Shropshire was born in New Orleans, Louisiana.
1820: Alabama's first Governor, William Wyatt Bibb died in office. Thomas Bibb, as President of the Senate, succeeded his brother as Governor.
