The 1956 Iron Bowl was decided on December 1, 1956, the ninth game in the series to be held at Legion Field. Auburn defeated Alabama by a score of 34-7 in front of 44,000 fans.

Auburn quarterback Howell Tubbs and runner Bobby Hoppe led the Tigers in their third-straight victory over the Crimson Tide. Tubbs finished with five completed passes for 102 yards and one touchdown to receiver Jerry Elliott. He had another rushing touchdown. Hoppe gained 112 yards on eight carries and Billy Kitchens recovered a fumble in the end zone. Alabama quarterback Bobby Smith was intercepted by Billy Atkins, leading to a Billy Cook rushing touchdown just after halftime. The Tigers put 27 points on the board with four touchdowns in five offensive plays spanning the end of the second and beginning of the third quarter. Elliott caught his second touchdown pass from backup quarterback Cook. Auburn finished the day with 489 yards of total offense.
