Alabama led by 17 at the half, but Auburn scored 23 unanswered points in the second half.  Alabama quarterback [[Freddie Kitchens]] completed a touchdown pass to [[Dennis Riddle]] to tie the game, and the extra point put the Tide ahead. Alabama head coach [[Gene Stallings]] announced his retirement after the game, effective after the Tide's bowl game against Michigan.

The 1996 Iron Bowl took place on November 23, 1996 at Legion Field in Birmingham. It was the 61st contest in the series. It was televised nationally on ESPN.

Alabama narrowly defeated Auburn 24-23. Alabama needed to win the game to advance to the SEC championship game.

Alabama trailed by a score of 20-17 at the half. After an Auburn field goal, Alabama quarterback Freddie Kitchens completed a touchdown pass to Dennis Riddle to tie the game, and the extra point put the Tide ahead.

Alabama head coach Gene Stallings announced his retirement after the game, effective after the Tide's bowl game against Michigan.
