Miss Birmingham is an annual local beauty pageant sponsored by the Birmingham News which serves as a preliminary to the Miss Alabama pageant.
The Miss Birmingham contest once served as a direct qualifier for the "Miss America" competition in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In 1936, 1946 and 1948 Miss Birmingham and the winner of the Miss Alabama pageant, also sponsored by the News, both competed in the national pageant. After 1948, Miss Birmingham became a qualifier for Miss Alabama.
Previously the pageant was staged at the Alabama Theatre. More recently it has been held at Oak Mountain High School in Pelham.
