In 1834, the Spanish Inquisition, long in decline, was officially abolished by royal decree. The Slavery Abolition Act 1833 went into effect, beginning the process of abolishing slavery in the British Empire. The Palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire. Athens became the capital of the newly independent Greek state.
