Revision as of 22:15, 29 July 2010

This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2010. It includes homicide cases occuring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.

28 homicides have been reported in the city as of July 19 putting Birmingham on pace for 50 in 2010. Based on the 2009 census estimate of 230,130 population, that represents 21.7 homicides per 100,000 population for the year. Birmingham had 72 homicides in 2009, 90 in 2008, and a record of 141 in 1992. At this time in 2009 there had been 39 homicides.

Birmingham is averaging 4.2 homicides per month, or one every 7.3 days. There was 1 incident in January, 3 in February, 4 in March, 4 in April, 4 in May, 7 in June and 5 so far in July. The longest stretch without a homicide was the 26 days between February 10 and March 8. Seven deaths were reported on Sundays, 2 on Mondays, 3 on Tuesdays, 4 on Wednesdays, 5 on Thursdays, 3 on Fridays and 4 on Saturdays.

Of the 28 reported homicides, suspects have been identified in 20 cases, apprehended in 20, charged in 15 and convicted in none. One homicide was ruled justifiable by prosecutors, one resulted from an incident that happened in the year prior, and one was the result of negligence. Not counting those, the police department acknowledges 25 murders in its tabulation for the year.

At least 23 of the 28 reported homicides were shootings; one was a stabbing; one resulted from a beating; and two from vehicular collisions. Two cases appeared to be domestic disputes. Robbery appeared to be the motive in 3 cases, fleeing from police pursuit caused another, and one resulted from an attempt to break up a fight. Thirteen incidents took place on the streets, 2 in parking lots, 2 inside businesses, 3 at apartment complexes and 7 at homes or apartments. 22 victims were males and 5 were females.

  2. Because Harris' death resulted from an act of self-defense, it is not counted in murder statistics.

Responses

A "March Against Violence" was organized on July 29 by Brenda Ward, mother of Ra'Sheed Ward, who was killed on June 17. The day would have been Ra'Sheed's 20th birthday. Approximately 55 people participated in the demonstration which began at Marino's Grocery and proceeded down Terrace S in Ensley.
