This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 1995. It includes homicide cases occuring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that not all homicides are ultimately ruled to be murder in courts of law.

Birmingham had 133 homicides in 1995, after 135 in 1994. There were, all told, 166 homicides in Jefferson County in 1995.

  1. January 1: Ronald Dawson, 17, dead of gunshot wounds in in the 1500 block of 1st Avenue North in Woodlawn. Shawn Jamal Morris, 19, convicted of reckless manslaughter on December 14, 1995.
  2. January 3: Edward Mims, 69, found dead in his home at 1912 25th Court North in North Birmingham.
  3. January 6: Samir Shatara, 33, dead of gunshot wounds in front of the in front of the Supreme Super Market in North Birmingham.
  4. January 6: Aletha Terry, 38, dead of gunshot wounds in the Elyton Village housing community.
  5. January 10: Kelvin Dean Thomas, 31, dead of gunshot wounds in the 1900 block of 11th Avenue South in Five Points South.
  6. January 15: Demetrius Taylor, 21, dead of gunshot wounds at 1737 Jefferson Avenue SW in West End .
  7. January 15: Moses Robinson, 19, dead of gunshot wounds at 1737 Jefferson Avenue SW in West End .
  8. January 16: Darinshelor Farahkhan, 24, dead of gunshot wounds at Walnut Avenue and 29th Street SW in West End .
  9. January 26: Douglas Crawford, 21, dead of gunshot wounds in the 2500 block of Avenue E in Ensley.
  10. January 28: Dan Davis Jr was shot to death by Birmingham Police Officer Charles Forbes during a struggle on the 1200 block of 29th Street North in Norwood. Forbes saw a group of four men around a van and ordered them to disperse. Davis refused to comply and resisted when Forbes attempted to arrest him. During the struggle, Forbes shot Davis, who then fled. Witnesses say that Forbes chased him down and shot him once more in the back. Forbes was charged with murder and convicted at trial on a lesser charge of manslaughter. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but earned early release in 2000 after just over three years served.
  11. January 31: Veronica "Ronnie" Miller, 26, found dead in a boarded-up house at 1725 23rd Avenue North in North Birmingham.
  12. February 2: William H. Estepp, 56, died from a gunshot wound to the head suffered during a robbery in a parking lot on the 2700 block of University Boulevard. His ex-wife, Teresa Turner, was also shot in the head but survived. No arrest.
  13. February 9: Gregory Davis, 30, dead of gunshot wounds in the 1600 block of Druid Hills Drive in Druid Hills.
  14. February 10: Ronald Dean Witherspoon, 22, dead of gunshot wounds in the 200 block of Wilson Court Way in Loveman Village.
  15. February 27: Patrick Wayne Gilmore, 26, dead of gunshot wounds in the 1900 block of 14th Avenue North in Fountain Heights.
  16. March 3: Bradley L. Warren, 46, dead of gunshot wounds in the 500 block of 4th Street North in Smithfield.
  17. March 13: Stanley Lee Glenn ,Jr., 22, dead of gunshot wounds an apartment parking lot in the 1300 block of Cotton Avenue SW in North Avondale.
  18. March 13: Marcellous Grace Jr, 42, dead of gunshot wounds in the 7400 block of Oporto Avenue.
  19. March 16: Jimmie Henry Fagin, 23, dead of gunshot wounds fired at Big Dixie's Bar-B-Q restaurant on Bessemer Road.
  20. March 17: Willie J. Browder, 79, dead of gunshot wounds fired at his home located at 3620 41st Avenue North in Harriman Park.
  21. March 18: James Evans, 28, dead of gunshot wounds fired at the Rickwood Apartments at 1118 Second Court West in Arlington Park-West End.
  22. March 18: Anthony Williams, 18, dead of gunshot wounds fired in the 2100 block of 4th Street in Pratt City.
  23. March 20: Renee Zipporah Wood, 16, found dead at a house in the 2400 block of 31st Street Ensley in Ensley.
  24. March 30: Arthur Williams, 16, found dead of gunshot wounds in the 300 block of Arthur Lane in Loveman Village.
  25. April 2: Michael Freely, 19, found dead of gunshot wounds outside Room 215 of the Inn Towne Lodge located at 400 Beacon Parkway West.
  26. April 2: Antonio Stone, 22, found dead of gunshot wounds inside Room 215 of the Inn Towne Lodge located at 400 Beacon Parkway West.
  27. April 8: Fantasia McNeal, 2, died from child abuse at the hands of her parents.
  28. April 9: Betty Long, 41, dead of gunshot wounds fired during a robbery at Long's 10th Avenue Laundry and Cleaning at 4641 10th Avenue North.
  29. April 22: Antonio Hendrick, 24, found dead of gunshot wounds in the 700 block of New Hill Court.
  30. May 7: Jonathan Bell, 22, found dead of gunshot wounds in a parking lot near the East Thomas Apartments on the 2200 block of 10th Place West.
  31. May 14: Jermaine Raphael Smith, 14, died of gunshot wounds in the 1600 block of 20th Place Ensley.
  32. May 17: Merritt Gregory Helton, 32, died after being hit by a gunshot and subsequently wrecking his car at 11th Court West.
  33. May 30: Rande Brian Savoy, 32, died after a car collision and shooting in the 100 block of 80th Street South in East Lake.
  34. June 3: Justin Barnett, 23, was lured to an apartment on the 7700 block of Sunrise Lane where he was stabbed and beaten to death and dismembered. His remains were buried near Centreville, but have not been found. The case remained unsolved until Johnathan Abney told Birmingham police that his sister, Tricia Faye Abney, a former Sammy's dancer, was involved in a murder. She was arrested in July 2015 and confessed. Her then-boyfriend and accomplice Jeff Martin was contacted by investigators in Mobile, but committed suicide. Abney was convicted of felony murder and sentenced to life in prison. Her conviction was upheld by the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals in August 2018. (report)
  35. June 10: An unnamed person was shot at Skipper's Pub and Deli at 3931 Vanderbilt Road in Inglenook.
  36. June 12: Raheem Adams, 17, was shot in a wooded alley near 50th Street North and Bristol Street in Inglenook.
  37. June 14: James A. Hooks, 68, was shot to death at his home in the 1900 block of Henry Crumpton Drive in Ishkooda.
  38. June 14: Terrell Nunn, 17, was found dead of gunshot wounds near the northern end of the West End High School track.
  39. June 15: Naquetta Adams, 17, was found shot in the 1700 block of 26th Street in Ensley.
  40. June 15: Quavoyne Cook, 18, was found shot in the 1700 block of 26th Street in Ensley.
  41. June 16: Johnathan Tartt, 24, was found dead of gunshot wounds to the head in an alley near the 2400 block of 5th Court North in Metropolitan Gardens.
  42. June 23: Theodore Walton, 65, shot in the 1200 block of 16th Place SW. Would pass away in University Hospital on June 26 as a result of his wounds.
  43. June 24: Gregory Lewis Pickens, 39, found shot in in a restaurant parking lot in the 9000 block of Parkway East.
  44. June 25: Billy Shelton, 15, found shot in his apartment at 1623 22nd Street in Ensley.
  45. June 27: Richard Baskin, 31, was found shot in his car in the 1500 block of 3rd Avenue West.
  46. June 27: Tommy Davis, 34, was shot in the 2900 block of 12th Avenue North.
  47. June 28: Cynthia Moore, 38, wasfound dead in a storm drain in the 800 block of 73rd Street South.
  48. June 28: Christopher E. Foster, 21, was shot in the 200 block of 59th Street South.
  49. July 5: Robrickett Prior, 20, was shot in the 2900 block of 16th Avenue North.
  50. July 8: Ron Son Nesby, 21, was shot in the 7200 block of Oporto Avenue.
  51. July 10: Kelvin D. McCray, 26, was shot at 6816 Crystal Hill Lane in Woodlawn.
  52. July 15: Kenneth Wayne Thompson, 28, shot outside a Southtown apartment in the 2400 block of 9th Court South.
  53. July 19: Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy William Hardy, 49, was shot "execution style", while working as an off-duty security guard at Crown Sterling Suites in the Southridge Office Park. Four men were charged in the case. Quintez Wilson and Omar Berry saw their charges dropped after a witness recanted her testimony. Wilson became a victim of homicide himself in 2008. Ardragus Ford was acquitted after two mistrials. Toforest Johnson was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death. In September 2023 the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal of his conviction based on unacknowledged payments made to a key witness. (report)

  55. August 3: John Jackson Jr, 28, was found shot in the 8000 block of 4th Avenue South in East Lake.
  56. August 3: Vincent Holloman, 44, found shot along a sidewalk near 2nd Avenue SW and Roosevelt Courtway.
  57. August 6: Ricky Smith Jr., 20, found shot at the intersection of 3rd Avenue North and 8th Street North.
  58. August 6: Kevin Smith, 17, found shot dead inside a house in the 7400 block of Naples Avenue.
  59. August 10: Oscar L. Mims, 48, found shot to death in the 300 block of Industrial Drive.
  60. August 11: Kenneth Tharpe Taylor, 34, found shot to death outside the BP station at 2301 Ensley Avenue.
  61. August 11: Ernest Gordon, 27, found shot to death in the 1100 block of 15th Street North.
  62. August 15: Clarence Satterwhite, 22, found shot to death in the 2800 block of 310th Street West.

  65. August 24: Habid Moshtaghi, 53, found dead at Triple B's Food Store at 1416 Spaulding-Ishkooda Road in Ishkooda.
  66. August 28: Dominick Rashad McBride, 17, found shot dead in his vechicle at 35th Avenue North and 25th Street North in North Birmingham.
  67. August 29: Arvind Patel, 56, shot to death during a robbery at the Subway located at 7801 1st Avenue North.
  68. August 31: Curtis Taylor, 48, shot at Gas World at 225 Dugan Avenue. Would pass away in University Hospital on September 16 as a result of his wounds.
  69. August 31: , , man found dead in the 4000 block of 17th Avenue North in Woodlawn.
  70. September 1: Amos Bowden, 39, found stabbed to death in the 1700 block of Decatur Avenue in Bush Hills.
  71. September 21: Lormard Davis, 25, shot to death in a house at 1152 15th Street SW.
  72. September 21: Shawanna Tanniehill, 19, shot to death in a house at 1152 15th Street SW.
  73. September 25: Darius Robinson, 16, shot to death near the corner of 16th Street SW and Tuscaloosa Avenue in West End.
  74. September 30: Glenn Hill, Sr., 41, found shot to death in the 3000 block of Avenue C in Ensley.

  76. October 6: Ronald L. Hudson Jr., 17, killed by gunfire the 2900 block of Snavely Avenue SW.
  77. October 6: James Edward Moss, 59, stabbed then shot during a robbery in the 2000 block of 33rd Avenue North.
  78. October 7: Joseph Bowie Jr., 35, killed by gunfire in the 100 block of 60th Street South.
  79. October 7: Willie Craig, 37, shot in a drive-by shooting in the 200 block of 8th Street North. Would pass away in University Hospital on October 21 as a result of his wounds.
  80. October 19: Michael Jones, 24, died of gunshot wounds in the parkin lot of outside Moma & Son's Hideaway located at 3537 37th Street SW in Ishkooda.
  81. October 21: Patrick Roland, 28, found shot to death in the 900 block of Webb Circle in an apparent robbery.
  82. October 21: Raymond Washington, 27, found shot in the 1600 block of Lee Avenue SW.
  83. October 31: Michael Propes, 45, found at in room of National 9 Inn at 2224 5th Avenue North, downtown.
  84. November 9: Patrick D. Sturdivant, 15, shot several times outside the Inglenook Recreation Center.
  85. November 11: Timothy Buckner, 29, shot and killed in the 8900 block of Airport Road.
  86. November 17: Sandra Minnis, 35, found dead in her home at 915 First Street North.

  89. December 6: Bryant Keith Stovall, 24, shot during invasion of house on 1200 block of 32nd Street North.
  90. December 7: Richard Fields, 19, was shot to death inside a car parked on 5th Avenue South near 54th Place South in Crestwood North. Nathaniel Scroggins, who was 16 at the time, claimed to have fired from the back seat when he thought Fields was going for a gun during a vocal argument over $5 change from a marijuana purchase. Scroggins was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life without parole. In 2016, following legal action brought by the Equal Justice Initiative in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Miller v. Alabama disallowing mandatory automatic life sentences for juveniles, the victim's family agreed to revise the sentence to life in prison with the possibility of parole, which would first be available after 30 years in prison.   95. December 30: Dwight Barber, 19, found dead at apartment on 900 block of 53rd Street North.

Responses

On December 19, police chief Johnnie Johnson told department heads that he wanted them to report not just on what had happened in their precincts, but on what they were planning to do to turn things around.

On January 2, 1996, mayor Richard Arrington presented a $4.2 million crime-fighting plan to the Birmingham City Council which involved passing two new laws, adding 80 new police officers, assigning full-time officers to public housing projects, and instituting a 9:00 PM curfew for minors on school nights.
