- 2009: A special election was held to elect a Mayor of Birmingham after the conviction of Larry Langford.
- 2007: Prattville High School won their second straight AHSAA 6A football championship by defeating Spain Park High School 14-0 in the Super Six at Legion Field.
- 2006: The last Birmingham-based taping of the Dixon & Willoughby morning show aired on WAPI-AM 1070.
- 2001: The Alabama Slammers lost on the road to the Orlando Fire 36-0.
- 1999: NBA all-star Charles Barkley suffered a career-ending injury.
- 1941: Football coach Bill Battle III was born in Birmingham.
- 1928: UAB doctor Charles Alford was born in Birmingham.
- 1921: Shades Valley Lodge No. 829 in Homewood was chartered.
- 1888: The bodies of Emma and Irene Hawes were found in Lakeview Park. Postmaster Maurice Throckmorton and nine others were killed during ensuing riot at the Jefferson County Jail.
- 1870: Josiah Morris purchased the 4,150 acres which would become Birmingham.
