1987-1988 UAB Blazers Men's Basketball team
The 1987-1988 UAB Blazers men's basketball team represented UAB as a member of the Sun Belt Conference during the 1987-88 NCAA Division I men's basketball season.
The Blazers were coached by Gene Bartow and played their home games at BJCC Coliseum in the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center.
The 1987-88 season was a rebuilding year for the Blazers replacing four starters from the previous season.
UAB's opened the season once again in Anchorage, Alaska. The Blazers were making their first appearance in the prestigious Great Alaska Shoutout since winning the 1984 edition. This time around things didn't go as well UAB, leaving the 49th state with a 1-2 record; recording a victory over Southwest Texas State (72-67) and losses to top ranked Syracuse (63-79) & 9th ranked Michigan (76-78).
The Blazer's racked up more miles than wins during the remaining non-conference portion of the schedule with road trips to El Paso Texas and Tokyo, Japan. The start of conference play saw UAB humbled with a modest 8-6 record.
Things didn't get much brighter against the once again formidable Sun Belt Conference slate. UAB only managed a 7-7 conference record, which was good enough for a 5th place finish.
The Blazers ended the season with a 73-78 loss to 4th seed South Alabama in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Richmond, Virginia.
UAB ended the season with a 16-15 overall record and missed postseason play for the first time in 9 seasons.
