This is a List of homicides in 2012, including homicide cases reported throughout the Birmingham District. At least 81 homicides have been reported in the area for the year to date. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the crime of murder as charged by prosecutors and determined by plea or trial.

Calhoun County

  1. July 21: Barry Wright, 50, was shot to death on the 300 block of Alice Street in Oxford. Cameron Lavorus White, Raphael Lamar Simmons and Terry Shondell Thomas were charged with murder. White and Simmons were arrested and Thomas turned himself in to police. (report)

Etowah County

  1. February 20: Savannah Hardin, 9, died of extreme dehydration after being forced to run for three hours as punishment for lying about eating a candy bar. Her step-mother and grandmother were charged with murder. (report)

  1. January 26: Horace Neil "Bo" Smith, 62, an employee at Torme's Associated Foods on 20th Street and 5th Avenue North, was shot and killed during a robbery. No arrest. The store is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to a conviction. (report)
  2. March 2: Michael Cummings, 47, a pedestrian, died in a hit-and-run at 9th Avenue and 33rd Street. Michael Anderson was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  3. March 2: Latosha Jenkins, a pedestrian, died in a hit-and-run at 9th Avenue and 33rd Street. Michael Anderson was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  4. March 4: Kenneth James Haver, 45, was found shot to death inside a home at 1702 8th Avenue Bessemer. A suspect has been taken into custody, but not yet charged.(report)
  5. May 20: Rodriquez Montrez Williams, 33, was shot and killed by housebreakers when he returned to his home on the 3300 block of Avenue C. No arrest. (report)
  6. September 15: Jaterius Jacquel Mason, 19, was shot at a home on Fairfax Avenue and transported to UAB Medical West, where he died from his wound. Carey Dmartin Williams was arrested and charged with murder. (report)

Brighton

Fairfield

  1. May 25: Duntrell Dajuan Goins, 17, was shot to death on the 5300 block of Avenue D. Investigators believe he had been involved in an ongoing feud with a group of men. Terrell Corey McMullin and Eugene Gray were arrested and charged with assault in connection with the incident. (report)
  2. August 9: Jimmy Hudson, Jr, 52, was shot to death in the parking lot of Legacy Mall on Aaron Aronov Drive. Dequian L. Knight turned himself in after being charged with murder. (report)

Forestdale

  1. February 12: Edmund "Preacher" Reed, 34, was shot to death in his car in the parking lot of the Jet-Pep gas station on the 1000 block of Forestdale Boulevard. Derrick Wayne Murray was identified as a suspect and charged with capital murder, but remains at large. (report)

Hueytown

  1. June 23: Corey Montez Stephenson, 28, died at UAB Hospital after being struck 10 times in a vehicle to vehicle shooting at 15th Street and 26th Avenue. No arrest. (report)
  2. August 22: Calvin Lee Robinson Jr, 21, was shot by Hueytown police during a confrontation with undercover narcotics officers. The incident is being reviewed by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation. (report)

  1. March 18: Unnamed female victim, 50, was found shot to death in a house on the 500 block of LaSalle Street. No arrest. (report)

Midfield

  1. September 3: Timothy James Bailey, 53, was shot to death, along with his wife, at their home on Hansen Street. His step-son, Raymond Davis, Jr, was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)

  1. April 11: The body of Elaine Gentry, 64, was found in her Lexus RX 300 under 40 feet of water in the abandoned Shale Road Quarry near U.S. Highway 78 in Leeds. Investigators believe that foul play was involved and ruled her death as a homicide. (report) Gentry's grandson, Daniel Scott Gentry, has been indicted for her murder. (report)
  2. May 7: Marquavious Anderson, 20 and Linh Quyet, 20, were found dead from gunshot wounds in an apartment at the Lakes of Inverness near U. S. Highway 280. Investigators suspect a murder-suicide. A young child was found uninjured in the apartment. (report)
  3. July 18: Humphrey Keith, 55, was stabbed to death at his home on the 4600 block of U. S. Highway 280 in Harpersville. His girlfriend, Shonta Cohill, was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  4. August 12: Emilio Alozo, 25, was found dead in his car after a collision on U. S. Highway 31 near Valley Elementary School in Pelham. Investigators determined that the death was caused by wounds suffered previously at a bar fight. Oscar Adonay Alvarenga, Jose Armando Erazo-Acosta, and Pedro Edgardo Portillo were arrested and charged with murder. (report)

  8. September 11; Tremain Gates, Jr, 4-months, died at Children's Hospital from injuries sustained when he was allegedly thrown against the wall of his Calera home by his father on August 25. Tremain Vanteas Gates was initially arrested and charged with assault, but later charged with capital murder. (report)
  9. September 20: William David Moore, Jr, was shot to death at his home on the 1200 block of Shelby County Highway 26. His Hummer SUV was stolen and recovered by police in Jackson, Mississippi. Lamario Brown of Birmingham was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property. (report)

St Clair County

  1. January 10: Stacey Owens Gamble, 48 and Alexander Gamble, 49, were found shot to death in their home in Odenville. Investigators suspect it was a murder-suicide. (report)
  2. May 9: John Rutledge, 30, was found strangled to death in his cell at the St Clair County Correctional Facility. (report)
  3. May 10: Katelynn Arnold, 8, was found hanging from a rope outside her house in Ragland. Her 14-year-old half-brother was charged with murder. (report)

Tallapoosa County

  1. May 5: Kimberley Waid was shot by her husband at their home on Oak Hill Drive in Alexander City. He telephoned police to confess, and was killed during the subsequent standoff. (report)
  2. May 5: Charles Waid was shot by police in self-defense during a standoff after he reported shooting his wife. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident. (report)

Tuscaloosa County

  1. March 31: An unnamed female, 7, was struck by a pickup truck while walking on the shoulder of 5th Street in Northport near Kentuck Park following the Tuscaloosa County Airshow. Danny Ray Smith, 64, was charged with vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, and two counts of first degree assault. (report)
  2. April 12: The body of Grace Johnson, 50, missing since March 3, was found in an abandoned mobile home near Sanders Ferry Road.   3. May 15: Hunter Daniel Grissom, 28, was found shot at the Binion Creek Landing Park at Lake Tuscaloosa off Tuscaloosa County Highway 43. His ex-wife, Tracey Grissom, called 911 after shooting him and surrendered to Sheriff's deputies. (report)
  4. August 18: Unnamed female, 73, was found dead in her home. Julius Ervin Cockrell, who reportedly confessed to her murder, remains at large. (report)
