The Jefferson County School System provides public schools for students in Jefferson County except for municipalities that have formed their own school systems. The system is governed by the Jefferson County Board of Education, with its main office in the former State Farm Mutual building at 2100 18th Street South in Birmingham. Craig Pouncey is the superintendent of schools.

Over the years, numerous local school systems have broken away from Jefferson County. Currently the county system is made up of 52 schools and employs over 2,500 teachers to educate nearly 36,000 students.

In 2017 the system announced a $200 million capital program to construct seven new schools and additions to nine others.
