This is a List of homicides in 2010, including homicide cases reported throughout the Birmingham District. At least 123 homicides have been reported in the area for the year, as of December 24, 2010. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the crime of murder as charged by prosecutors and determined by plea or trial.

Bibb County

  1. May 25: Tyus Elliott, 26, was stabbed with a prison-made knife at the Bibb County Correctional Facility in Brent. Dexter Drummond Fields, serving a sentence for first-degree rape, is suspected but not yet charged. (report)
  2. October 8: Thomas Duane Banks, 50, a construction worker at the new Bibb County Board of Education building in Centreville, was shot and killed by Israel Cid, a recently-fired coworker. Cid was arrested and charged with murder. (report)

Blount County

  1. April 5: Montavious Lamar Moore, 21, was shot in Opelika and pronounced dead at the East Alabama Medical Center. Demetrius Shorter turned himself in to police and was charged with murder. (report)
  2. Jesse Bullard, 43, missing from his home in Blountsville since December 2009, was found buried in a shallow grave off Cox Gap Road near Alabama Highway 79 in Marshall County. His wife, Carla, was charged with murder. Others may have been involved, and the investigation is ongoing. (report)

Calhoun County

  1. January 24: Dariontae Brooks, 22, died from a gunshot to the head in an Anniston apartment. No arrest. (report)
  2. September 19: Dimir Burton, 39, died five days after being stabbed in the head during a fight in the parking lot of the Car Exchange in Anniston. Terrance Allen, who had been charged with felony assault, was subsequently charged with murder. (report)

Etowah County

  1. January 18: Nita Gay Denson, 63, was found dead from blunt force trauma in the bedroom of her Gadsden home. Her son, Justin Denson, was arrested on I-55 near Memphis, Tennessee after using one of her credit cards. He was charged with capital murder. (report)
  2. March 7: Christopher Lashun Hoyt, 17, was shot in the back during a gunfight following a party on the 1400 block of Park Avenue in Gadsden. He died later at Gadsden Regional Medical Center. Gregory Hamilton, identified by witnesses as the shooter, was taken into custody. He was charged with marijuana possession with further charges pending investigation. (report)
  3. May 19: Monica Payne, 28, was found dead in a house at 5588 Clinton Street in Hokes Bluff. A male suspect was taken into custody but not yet charged. (report)
  4. June 21: The body of Tonya Turnmire, 36, last seen on June 4, was found after her ex-boyfriend, Ray Shockley, led them to where he claims to have dumped her body after killing her at their home in Albertville. (report)
  5. July 13: Justin Pope, 27, was found stabbed to death in the front yard of a home in East Gadsden. His girlfriend, Tandenieka Walker, was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  6. July 20: Joel David Kutchenreuter, 53, was found shot to death in his bed at 148 Clay Drive in the Ballplay community near Hokes Bluff. His wife, Carlotta Susann Kutschenreuter was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  7. August 29: Anthony Ray Sampson, 55, was found dead inside a home at 1319 Shady Grove Road in Boaz after shots were fired by Etowah County Sheriff's deputies attempting to serve a drug warrant against another resident of the house. The shooting appears to have been justified. (report)

Bessemer

  1. January 10: Marquis Delano White, 32, was shot at the wheel of his car and crashed into a convenience store on the 900 block of Hall Avenue. No arrest. A reward of $5,000 has been offered by the Governor's office. (report)
  2. May 19: Antonio Deon Gaitor, 27, was killed in a drive by shooting on the 600 block of 36th Avenue North in the Brasswell Homes housing community. Lawanza McCormic was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  3. May 22: Kerry Van Turner, 19, was shot in the back behind the Peppertree Apartments after a fistfight. Gabriel Rogers was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  4. May 27: Trevor Mullins, 35, was found stabbed to death at his house at 2714 7th Avenue. His girlfriend, Eboni Bell, was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  5. June 11: Tyrone Burden, 21, was shot several times in the parking lot at the Exxon station at 901 4th Avenue near Snitz Snider Memorial Stadium. He died the next day at UAB Hospital. A suspect has been identified, but is not yet in custody. (report)
  6. July 2: Maurice Thomas, 23, a student and football player at Alabama A&M University, was killed in a shootout at Getties Boyz Club at 22nd Street and 1st Avenue that left two others wounded. Terry Towns was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder. (report)
  7. July 26: Cadence Davidson, 2 months, died from multiple fractures at Children's Hospital. Her mother, Whitney Wilson of Indiana, was visiting her parents in Bessemer when the child was brought to the hospital. Wilson was arrested for abuse and capital murder. (report)
  8. August 7: Christopher Andre Ward, 31, was shot to death following an argument on West Lake Circle in the Westlake Lodge apartments. Alonzo Dawain Stallworth was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  9. October 11: Theodore Morrow, 61, was found dead in his home on the 700 block of 26th Street North. No arrest. (report)

Brighton

  1. May 30: Jilberto Ulloa, 24, was shot after dancing with another man's wife at a party at the Holiday Mobile Home Park in the 4400 block of the Bessemer Super Highway. He died later at UAB Hospital. Filiberto Galarza and Serafin Jaramio were arrested and charged with murder, assault and receiving stolen property. (report)
  2. June 1: Julio Valdez, 36, was found shot to death at the Holiday Mobile Home Park in the 4400 block of the Bessemer Super Highway. No arrest. (report)

Center Point

  1. February 16: Robert Honeycutt, 55, was found beaten to death in his home at the Amberwood Apartments. The coroner found that he died from a heart attack brought on by the effort of fighting off an assault. His neighbor, Michael Hall, in custody on unrelated charges, was charged with the murder in May. (report)
  2. May 23: Leevon Turner, 21, died at UAB Hospital after being stabbed at a residence on Bond Circle. Investigators determined that the stabbing, which occurred while Turner's sister was washing dishes, was accidental. (report)
  3. July 24: Edgar Perez, 34, was killed while driving on Center Point Parkway when his car was rear-ended by a speeding vehicle. His pregnant wife died a day later, but the infant was safely delivered. Two other children in the car, aged 8 and 11, were also injured. Joseph Alexander Goolsby, the driver of the speeding car, had been drinking. He was arrested and charged with murder caused by operating a vehicle with extreme indifference to human life. (report)

  5. September 18: Owen Williams, Jr, 24, was stabbed to death on the 1500 block of 5th Place Northwest (map). Suspect David Owens, Jr turned himself in to police. (report)

Clay

  1. September 24: Byron Keith Durbin, 42, was shot to death in his home on the 6100 block of Old Springville Road. His wife admitted to shooting him, claiming that she feared for her life. She was questioned and released, with investigators working with the District Attorney to decide if charges will be filed. {report)

Fairfield

  1. March 4: Jacquelyn Woodhouse, 66, was killed in a vehicular collision on Valley Road near U. S. Steel's Fairfield Works. Andrew Toney, who was injured, was charged with murder after witnesses reported that he was speeding. (report)
  2. March 17: Labrian Mallard, 25, was shot and killed on the 500 block of 42nd Street. A suspect has been identified, but is not yet in custody. (report)
  3. July 4: Danzell "Boon" Lambert, 22, was shot to death during what may have been a robbery on Seminole Circle. Two men contacted Birmingiham police to turn themselves in. (report)
  4. October 22: Michael Parrish, 29, was shot to death outside his house on the 600 block of 55th Place. Suspect Anthony Canada agreed to turn himself in. (report)

Gardendale

  1. January 20: The body of Chase Alexander Woods, 17, was found near an abandoned strip mine off Pumpkin Center Cut-Off in Quinton (Walker County). Because authorities believe his death was caused at a residence in Gardendale, the investigation was conducted by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. Dustin Blake Legrande has been charged with murder. (report)
  2. June 19: The April 22 death of Justin Keith Stockton, 16 months old, was determined to be homicide by "sequelae of severe malnutrition" by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office. Jeffery and Rebecca Stockton, his parents, were arrested and charged with manslaughter. (report)

Homewood

  1. June 14: William Owens, 17, died after being incapacitated by two uses of a Taser by an officer of the Homewood Police Department at Herzing University on West Valley Avenue. He was a member of a group of teenagers observed breaking into cars. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office ruled that Owen's death resulted from a "sequelae of confrontation of Taser use," and it was therefore classified as homicide. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the circumstances to determine if the officer's actions were inappropriate. (report)

Hoover

  1. June 29: Reginald Herron, 22, was shot to death at the Park at Galleria apartments. Three suspects, acquaintances of the victim, were taken into custody. Two were later released while Tom Webb III was charged with murder. (report)

Irondale

  1. April 2: James Bradford Boynton, 23, was shot to death at the Colonial Village at Trussville apartments off Meadows Drive in Irondale. A suspect has been identified, but not yet apprehended. (report)

Leeds

  1. March 23: Shaun Rose, 30, was shot while on the porch of a duplex at 1633 Moton Street. Lowan Maurice Cosper was arrested in April at the Cedar Grove Apartments and charged with capital murder. (report)

Lipscomb

  1. January 31: Fernando B. Pruitt, 30, was stabbed to death in a fight with his girlfriend at his home at 509 Patton Court. Pruitt was taken to UAB West and then to UAB Hospital before he was pronounced dead. Cherell Monique Averhart, who was 5-months pregnant at the time, was charged with murder. (report)

  1. March 3: Demico Howard, 35, was shot to death at the instersection of Rayfield Drive and Midway Street. Lamarcus Chiles was arrested in April and charged with murder and attempted murder. (report)

  1. September 25: Joel Clayton, 34, was shot to death in an apparent double-murder suicide during a cookout on the 2800 block of Potts Hollow Road. Renato Mata, 49, who later killed himself in the back yard of the same house, was the shooter. (report)

  1. March 15: James Pryor III, 34, was killed at his girlfriend's home on the 1200 block of Jackson Boulevard. Her ex-boyfriend found them there and killed Pryor. His car was observed leaving the area and stopped. He was arrested after blood was seen on his clothing. (report)
  2. March 16: Daniel Mosely, 49, was killed in his sister's 2004 Grand Am on the 1300 block of Sloan Avenue. Reginald White, Jr, the sister's boyfriend, who had been involved in a dispute over the car, was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)

Trussville

  1. September 24: Billy Pierce, 61, was one of two persons found shot to death in an apparent murder-suicide at a home on the 7600 block of Cottonridge Road. His brother, the presumed shooter, was found dead in a car in the garage. (report)
  2. September 24: Sharon Pierce, 59, was the second of two persons found shot to death in an apparent murder-suicide at a home on the 7600 block of Cottonridge Road. Her husband, the presumed shooter, was found dead in a car in the garage. (report)

Vestavia Hills

  1. July 24: Jonathan Chandler, 45, was killed when his motorcycle was struck by a minivan at the intersection of U. S. Highway 280 and Dolly Ridge Road. William Pulliam, of Louisville, Kentucky, was charged with vehicular homicide. (report)

Unincorporated Jefferson County

  1. May 23: Preston Jenkins, 54, was shot and killed while breaking into a house on the 4300 block of Jolley Road. Jenkins was acquainted with the homeowners ex-wife, who was present at the time. (report)
  2. June 4: William Jackson, 23, was shot and killed by the boyfriend of a former girlfriend on the 1000 block of Villa Rica Court off Springville Road in an unincorporated area adjoining Huffman High School. The suspect has been identified, but not yet captured. (report)
  3. September 12: Saumil "Don" Patel, 25, was shot in the back and killed during a robbery at the Forestdale Jet-Pep station at 1084 Forestdale Boulevard in Forestdale. Two suspects fled in a late-model white Chevrolet Caprice. Willie Deon Brown Jr and Robert Lee Mitchell, Jr, were arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  4. December 3: Sherry Young Johnson, 39, was stabbed to death in her bed, at home on Stonebriar Trace west of Clay. Her husband, Anthony Dewayne Johnson, drove his three children to his mother's house, then turned himself in at Birmingham Police Headquarters. (report)

  1. April 12: Theodore Thaddeus Reese, 32, was shot to death in gunfight at a house on Lee Road 17 in Auburn. Auntavious Jashon Curry, who was injured, was charged with murder. (report)

  1. May 14: Gwendolyn Elizabeth Tuggle Proctor, 77, was found stabbed to death in her home at 1346 Caliston Way in the Ballantrae subdivision in Pelham. Her husband, William Virgil Proctor, was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  2. July 18: Christopher Gene Smith, 34, was found shot to death at a home on the 400 block of Hiawatha Road east of Calera. His father, Bobby Gene Smith, was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  3. August 28: Myles David Reid, 54, was killed during a domestic disturbance on 900 block of Shelby County Highway 438 in Westover. His son, Myles David Reid, Jr was arrested and charged with murder. Additional charges were filed after drugs were found in his possession. (report)
  4. August 28: Drayden McGowan, 2, was found dead at a home on the 200 block of Bridle Trail in Harpersville. Joshua Jewell Franklin, who believed he was Drayden's father at the time, has been charged with murder and felony aggravated child abuse. (report)
  5. November 12: Jessica Wyatt Fields, 32, was killed along with two of her children in an auto collision at the intersection of Shelby County Highway 55 and U. S. Highway 280 near Westover. St Clair County

  1. February 11: An unnamed male was shot and killed by a homeowner after he and two others broke into his home in the Trails End community near Moody. The three were wielding baseball bats and assaulted the homeowner. Four surviving suspects involved in the break-in have been charged with murder. (report)

Talladega County

  • May 29: Unnamed male, 42, was found stabbed to death as the result of an apparent domestic dispute on 2nd Avenue in Lincoln. (report)
  • August 31: Shalanda Elaine Pope, 38, was shot to death in a car parked in the Blue Bell Creameries at West Fourth Street and North Anniston Avenue in Sylacauga. Her former husband, Michael Cornelius Milliner, was also found injured. Investigators believe that the incident was a murder and attempted-suicide. (report)

Tuscaloosa County

  1. February 15: The death of 2-month old baby brought to DCH Regional Medical Centerl in Tuscaloosa with fatal injuries was classified as a homicide after the autopsy revealed blunt force trauma as the cause of death. (report)
  2. April 11: The 4-month-old son of Miguel Juan and Moira Lopez of Northport's Green Village died from blunt force trauma at DCH Regional Medical Center. After the autopsy, the parents were questioned. Both were charged with capital murder. (report)
  3. April 27: Christopher Antonio Collins, 18, was shot and killed while robbing a man returning home on the 3400 block of 18th Street in Northport. Investigators concluded that the intended victim fired in self-defense. Tuscaloosa County deputies arrested Collins' accomplice, Rashad Drakkar Hayward, and charged him with first degree robbery and felony murder for his role in the incident. (report)
  4. May 16: Unnamed male, 17, was killed in a shootout during a graduation party at the clubhouse of the Links At Tuscaloosa‎ apartment complex. Eight others were wounded in the shooting. Akeem Antwan Prewitt was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder. (report)
  5. October 26: Angela Quick was raped and murdered at her home in the University Manor Apartments at 2918 5th Avenue. No arrest. (report)

Walker County

  1. March 5: The remains of Richard Douglas Harris, 63, missing since February 12, were found near Baltimore Road outside Cordova by a motorist. James David Hollie and Brian Michael Smelley were arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  2. May 4: The remains of Stephanie Newman, 22, missing since December 21, 2009, were located in a wooded area of Cordova with help from Michael Wayne Humphries, who was then charged with murder. (report)
  3. October 11: Misty Emmitt was shot to death at her apartment at 2212 12th Avenue. Her neighbor, Albert Garner, was charged with manslaughter. (report)
