This is a List of homicides in 2022, including homicide cases reported throughout the Birmingham District. At least 39 homicides have been reported in the area for the year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the crime of murder as charged by prosecutors and adjudicated through the courts.

  1. January 11: Taevion Fife, 15, died from a gunshot wound suffered during an argument at the intersection of 13th Street and Christopher Avenue in Anniston. Nathan Higgins was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  2. January 16: An unnamed woman, 36, died at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center from a gunshot wound suffered at the PURE Sports Bar & Grill at 1800 South Quintard Avenue. No arrest. (report)
  3. February 14: Alexander Kade Lanier, 26, was killed in a shootout with Oxford Police following a carjacking at the Waffle House at 65 Jimmy Hinton Drive and a chase on I-20 westbound which culminated at Alabama State Highway 21 near the Anniston Regional Airport. (report)

Bessemer

  1. February 14: Janiyah Simmons, 15, died from a gunshot wound suffered at a house on the 300 block of 30th Street South. The shooting appears to have been accidental, taking place while she and a friend were playing with a handgun. The shooter cooperated with police and is being held pending charges. (report)

Fairfield

  1. January 25: Paul Evans Smith Jr, 18, was found shot to death, and a 23-year-old male injured, on the 4000 block of DeBardeleben Avenue. De'Marco Ra'Shaun Smith (no relation) was arrested in February and charged with capital murder. (report)

Hoover

  1. January 29: Madison Shea Pilkington, 25, was found beaten to death in her home at The Halston apartments. Her boyfriend and co-worker, Cortez Lenard Warren, was identified as a suspect and led police on a chase on I-65 northbound before pulling over. He was charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence and unlawful possession of marijuana. A Fultondale police officer was injured during the pursuit when his cruiser was struck by another vehicle. (report)

  1. January 11: Kyler Small, 2, died from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound. His mother, Krishana Danyell Small, was arrested and charged with manslaughter. (report)

Irondale

  1. January 2: McKayla Roberts, 27, was struck and killed while walking on I-20 between the Grants Mill Road and Old Leeds Road exits. The driver of a Dodge Journey believed to have hit her did not stop and is sought. (report)

Unincorporated Jefferson County

  1. January 1: Robert Leon Doss, 36, was found dead in a wooded area off Lock 17 Road near Griffis Road west of Oak Grove. His death is being investigated as an apparent homicide. No arrest. (report)
  2. January 8: John Christopher Taylor-Wilson, 20, was found shot to death near the intersection of Shady Grove Road and Porter Road in Maytown. No arrest. (report)
  3. January 15: Ronda Bilbro Early, 73, was killed in a three-vehicle collision on Pinson Valley Parkway near Meadow Craft Road. One of the drivers left the scene and is sought. (report)
  4. February 22: Barry Wardell Gardner, 33, an inmate at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, was found stabbed to death in an open dormitory area. No suspects or charges have been announced.   1. January 19: Sharon Tarwater Whited, 40, was found stabbed and shot to death at her home at 156 Piney Woods Drive. Her boyfriend, John Peyton Scott III was charged with capital murder and captured five days later in St Johns County, Florida. (report)
  2. January 19: Chester Tarwater Jr, 75, was found shot to death in the same incident.
  3. February 15: An unnamed male was shot to death at the doorway to a home at 321 Honeysuckle Lane in the Windstone subdivision. The shooting victim is believed to have wounded another man in an apparent domestic stabbing incident and then gone on foot, nude and reportedly in an state of "excited delirium", to other houses in the neighborhood. He was said to have been banging on the door of the house on Honeysuckle Lane before the door was opened, a struggle ensued, and he was shot to death by someone inside the home in what is presumed to have been self defense. Another person present inside that home was an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency officer. The Shelby County Major Crime Task Force is investigating. (report)
  4. February 21: A man was found dead, and another man injured, in a one-car collision on Shelby County Road 37 near Verda Green Lane south of Columbiana that followed a chase by Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies. The deputies said they were fired upon from the car, but did not return fire. (report)

St Clair County

  1. January 31: An unnamed female was found dead at the Sherwin Williams paint store at 2205 Moody Parkway in Moody. No arrest. (report)
  2. January 31: Nathan L. Loot, 46, was found dead inside a home on the 1000 block of Wolf Creek Road South in Pell City. No arrest. (report)
  3. February 16: Alton K. Johnson was shot to death by a juvenile during an altercation on the Hearthstone Drive area of Odenville. No arrests announced. (report)

Talladega County

  1. February 11: Sri Satya Krishna Chitturi, 27, was shot to death during a robbery at the Crown service station at 3694 Old Birmingham Highway (Talladega County Road 511), at the intersection of Skyview Road in the Town of Oak Grove, just northwest of Sylacauga. No arrest. (report)

Tuscaloosa County

  1. February 8: Dennis Melton, 27, was struck by a car while walking alongside I-59/20, close to mile marker 76 in southwestern Tuscaloosa. Witnesses reported to investigators that the incident appeared to have been intentional. Angelica Quintana was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
