This is a List of homicides in 2012, including homicide cases reported throughout the Birmingham District. At least 144 homicides were reported in the area for the year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the crime of murder as charged by prosecutors and determined by plea or trial.

Blount County

  1. September 27: Ralph Bircheat, 72, was killed and his wife seriously injured when their car was hit head-on on U.S. Highway 278, about five miles east of Snead, just after 8:00 PM. Jeremy Umphrey, who crossed a double yellow line to pass an 18-wheeler on a hill, was indicted for manslaughter in 2013. He was convicted in March 2016. (report)

Calhoun County

  1. April 6: Dequirea Royal, 24, was found dead in her apartment at Constantine Homes in Anniston. She died from a single gunshot wound to the head. Kenmonte Jacobe Winsley, Demontae Antwon Jones, and Kenyata Demetris Burton were arrested and charged with murder. Winsley and Jones have both been indicted. (report)
  2. July 21: Barry Wright, 50, was shot to death on the 300 block of Alice Street in Oxford. Cameron Lavorus White, Raphael Lamar Simmons and Terry Shondell Thomas were charged with murder. White and Simmons were arrested and Thomas turned himself in to police. (report)
  3. October 18: A 35-year-old male was shot to death on the 1600 block of West 13th Street in Anniston. A 62-year-old resident at that address was questioned, but no arrests have been made. (report)
  4. December 15: Romero Roberto Moya, 33, was shot to death after leading police on a chase from neighborhing Cleburne County, where he was a suspect in a domestic triple homicide. He crashed his car at the interchange of Leon Smith Parkway and U. S. Highway 78 in Oxford and then fired at his pursuers with an AK-47, wounding one member of the Heflin Police Department. Moya hijacked another car, which he crashed in Coldwater, at which time he was killed by members of the Oxford Police Department's SWAT team. (report)

Chilton County

  1. October 9: Daquan Marquise Crenshaw, 19, was shot to death at the Rolling Oaks Apartments in Clanton. No arrest. (report)

Etowah County

  1. February 20: Savannah Hardin, 9, died of extreme dehydration after being forced to run for three hours as punishment for lying about eating a candy bar. Her step-mother and grandmother, Joyce Garrard, were charged with murder. Garrard was convicted of capital murder at trial in March 2015 and sentenced to life in prison by Judge Billy Ogletree. At least 112 homicides were reported in Jefferson County.

Bessemer

  1. January 26: Horace Neil "Bo" Smith, 62, an employee at Torme's Associated Foods on 20th Street and 5th Avenue North, was shot and killed during a robbery. No arrest. The store is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to a conviction. (report)
  2. March 2: Michael Cummings, 47, a pedestrian, died in a hit-and-run at 9th Avenue and 33rd Street. Michael Anderson was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  3. March 2: Latosha Jenkins, a pedestrian, died in a hit-and-run at 9th Avenue and 33rd Street. Michael Anderson was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  4. March 4: Kenneth James Haver, 45, was found shot to death inside a home at 1702 8th Avenue Bessemer. Lowe Patton was arrested and charged with murder. He claimed that he went to the house to intervene in a fight between Haver and Lowe's housemate. He fired in self-defense from his car as Haver, who was drunk, approached him brandishing a wooden bed post. He was convicted in Judge David Carpenter's court on the lesser charge of manslaughter with provocation. (report)
  5. May 20: Rodriquez Montrez Williams, 33, was shot and killed by housebreakers when he returned to his home on the 3300 block of Avenue C. No arrest. (report)
  6. September 15: Jaterius Jacquel Mason, 19, was shot at a home on Fairfax Avenue and transported to UAB Medical West, where he died from his wound. Carey Dmartin Williams was arrested and charged with murder. (report)
  7. September 19: Jalen Moultry, 5, was killed in an auto collision on Lakeshore Parkway. Chelcey Hardella Banks, driver of the car that struck his, pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide. (report)
  8. October 5: John Howard Hines was shot to death during an argument with an acquaintance at the intersection of Shades Street and Carter Avenue. Derrick Cox was arrested and charged with murder. (report)

Brighton

  1. September 25: Ajamu Coles, 34, was shot to death outside a business near the intersection of Huntsville Avenue and Main Street. Frank Sealie was convicted of the murder and sentenced to life. He was freed in March 2015 after two witnesses recanted their testimony that he was the shooter. (report)

Fairfield

  1. May 25: Duntrell Dajuan Goins, 17, was shot to death on the 5300 block of Avenue D. Investigators believe he had been involved in an ongoing feud with a group of men. Terrell Corey McMullin and Eugene Gray were arrested and charged with assault in connection with the incident. (report)
  2. August 9: Jimmy Hudson, Jr, 52, was shot to death in the parking lot of Legacy Mall on Aaron Aronov Drive. Dequian L. Knight turned himself in after being charged with murder. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was given a split 20 year sentence with five years to serve by Judge David Carpenter. (report)
  3. December 9: Ryan Jordan, 19, was shot to death in a house at 3305 Avenue H. He and three accomplices were committing armed robbery against a man lured to the house, who fired in self-defense. The other robbers, Erick Densmore, Corey Dortch and Cherrell Mitchell, were charged with murder. Dortch and Densmore pleaded guilty to reckless manslaughter and were given 15-year split sentences with two years to serve. Mitchell entered a blind plea to felony murder and Judge Bill Cole gave her a 20-year split sentence with five years to serve. (report)

Homewood

  1. December 14: Araceli Juarez-Montero, 30, was found beaten to death, along with her two sons, at their Abbey at Boulder Ridge apartment at Aspen Circle. Ana Patricia Dominguez was arrested and charged with capital murder. She pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of felony murder before Judge Teresa Pulliam, and was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole. (report)
  2. December 14: Uziel David Juarez, 5, was found strangled to death alongside his mother and younger brother at their apartment at Aspen Circle.
  3. December 14: Hugo Adial Juarez, 4, was found strangled to death alongside his mother and older brother at their apartment at Aspen Circle.

Hoover

  1. November 24: John Ballinger, Jr, 68, was injured when his car was struck on the 2500 block of John Hawkins Parkway, Though he initially declined an ambulance, his family took him to St Vincent's Medical Center. He was transferred to UAB Hospital where he died the same evening. Kyle Gavin McCay, who was driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.26 after an Iron Bowl party, was charged with murder in January 2013. He was convicted on the lesser charge of manslaughter in David Hobdy's court in April 2014 and sentenced to five years in prison and five years on probation. (report)
  2. December 21; Lakenya Chanise Moton, 20, was shot to death at Martini's Ultra Lounge at 2132 Lorna Ridge Lane. Phillip Terral Player was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  3. December 21: Monterio Alonzo Peebles-Kellogg, 19, was shot to death at Martini's Ultra Lounge at 2132 Lorna Ridge Lane. Phillip Terral Player was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)

Hueytown

  1. June 23: Corey Montez Stephenson, 28, died at UAB Hospital after being struck 10 times in a vehicle to vehicle shooting at 15th Street and 26th Avenue. No arrest. (report)
  2. August 22: Calvin Lee Robinson Jr, 21, was shot by Hueytown police during a confrontation with undercover narcotics officers. The incident is being reviewed by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation. (report)

Irondale

  1. March 18: Unnamed female victim, 50, was found shot to death in a house on the 500 block of LaSalle Street. No arrest. (report)

Midfield

  1. September 3: Timothy James Bailey, 53, was shot to death, along with his wife, at their home on Hansen Street. His step-son, Raymond Davis, Jr, reportedly intervened in a domestic dispute, shooting at his stepfather and accidently killing his mother. He was arrested and charged with capital murder, but pleaded guilty to felony murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison by Judge David Hobdy. (report)
  2. September 3: Clarice Denise Bailey, 52, was shot to death, along with her husband, in the same incident. He was charged with manslaughter in that death, but has not yet been tried. (report)
  3. October 30: Fernateze Randall, 19, was shot to death while sitting in a car outside his grandmother's house at 321 Bessemer Super Highway. Another passenger was seriously wounded. No arrest. (report)

Vestavia Hills

  1. December 5: Annie Morrison, 90, and her son David Morrison, 59, were discovered shot to death in an apparent murder-suicide at their house on Montclaire Circle off Shades Crest Road. (report)

Unincorporated areas

  1. February 12: Edmund "Preacher" Reed, 34, was shot to death in his BMW 330i in the parking lot of the Jet-Pep gas station on the 1000 block of Forestdale Boulevard in Forestdale. Derrick Wayne Murray was identified as a suspect and charged with capital murder. He turned himself in to police a week later. He apparently mistook Reed for someone else who had shot at him six months before. Murray was convicted at trial in Bill Cole's court in July 2015 and sentenced to life in prison without parole. The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals upheld his conviction in April 2017. (report)
  2. April 16: Matthew Joshua "Glock" Hale, 28, was found shot to death on the 4200 block of Sharon Church Road just north of Pinson. Demarquis Glennerd Brown was arrested on April 5, 2013 and charged with capital murder. Investigators believe that a person from whom Hale allegedly stole marijuana had put a contract out for his murder. (report)
  3. June 14: Larrice Montez Bryant, 33, was shot to death after a failed drug purchase on the 1900 block of Center Point Road. Two suspects jumped into his car and forced him to the 1600 block of 6th Place Northwest, where he was killed. Demario Jones was charged with murder, but acquitted at trial in Judge Laura Petro's court in 2014. His testimony, however, included admissions to parole violations from a previous burglary conviction. (report)
  4. June 26: A partially decomposed body was found in a wooded area near the 1500 block of Jackson Street in Dolomite. The Jefferson County Coroner found evidence that the death was caused by homicide. No arrest. (report)
  5. June 29: The remains of David Robinson, 24, were found in a wooded area near James Street in Dolomite. His identity and the cause of death, a gunshot, were not determined until November 2013. No arrest. (report)
  6. July 26: Steven Newell, 23, an inmate at Donaldson Correctional Facility, was stabbed to death during a fight with a fellow inmate. (report)
  7. September 19: Antanisha "Neisha" Dawson, 22, was found dead near the end of Pope Lane in North Smithfield Manor. No arrest. (report)
  8. October 2: Ryan Max Culwell, 20, was killed along with his wife and daughter in an auto collision at the intersection of Birmingport Road and Minor Parkway. Their car was struck by a car driven by Dominique Rashad Smith with Jeffrey Howe a passenger. They were fleeing law enforcement officers investigating a robbery in Cordova. Smith and Howe were each charged with three counts of murder. Smith was released on $225,000 bond, but he was arrested for possession of marijuana by Adamsville police. During a bond revocation hearing in Bill Cole's courtroom, Smith fled the Mel Bailey Criminal Justice Center, but was quickly recaptured when his mother brought him back to the jail. Smith pleaded guilty to felony murder in September 2014 in a deal requiring him to testify against Howe in exchange for a 20-year sentence. Howe filed a guilty plea with no offer from prosecutors on the same day. (report)
  9. October 2: Nicole Verus, 23, was killed in the same collision.
  10. October 2: Rogue Marie Culwell, 10 months old, was killed in the same collision.

Lee County

  1. January 28: The skeletal remains Amore Joveh Wiggins, born January 2006, were found at the Brook Haven Trailer Park in Opelika. The coroner ruled that her death was caused by homicide. Forensic investigation suggested she had been killed in 2010 or 2011. Through DNA analysis she was eventually identified, and her father, Lamar Vickerstaff Jr, was arrested in 2023 and charged with murder. (report)
  2. May 4: Tyrone Allen, 42, died of a stab wound to the chest suffered during a fight with his girlfriend. Sheneka Butler was charged with manslaughter. (report)
  3. June 9: Edward Christian, 20, was one of three men shot to death during a gunfight at a pool party at University Heights apartments near the campus of Auburn University. Desmonte Leonard was convicted of murder in October 2014 and sentenced by Lee County Circuit Court Judge Jacob Walker to life in prison without parole. (report)
  4. June 9: Ladarius Phillips 20, was another of the three men shot to death in the same incident.
  5. June 9: Demario Pitts, 20, was the third of three men shot to death in the same incident.
  6. December 7: Lamar Curtis Lockhart, 44, was fatally wounded in a shootout on the 3100 block of Lee County Road 188 in Loachapoka. Justin Rashad Wright is wanted in connection with the investigation, but remains at large. (report)
  7. December 7: Lamar Shanks, 24, was wounded during the same shooting in Loachapoka and died later at the East Alabama Medical Center.

Shelby County

  1. April 11: The body of Carrie Elaine Gentry, 64, was found wrapped ina rug inside her Lexus RX 300 under 40 feet of water in the abandoned Shale Road Quarry near U.S. Highway 78 in Leeds. She had been strangled, beaten and stabbed to death. Gentry's grandson, Daniel Scott Gentry, confessed to the murder and was sentenced on August 24, 2015 to life in prison without parole. He was found hanged to death in his cell at the Donaldson Correctional Facility in February 2019. The death was presumed to be suicide. (report)
  2. May 7: Marquavious Anderson, 20 and Linh Quyet, 20, were found dead from gunshot wounds in an apartment at the Lakes of Inverness near U. S. Highway 280. Investigators suspect a murder-suicide. A young child was found uninjured in the apartment. (report)
  3. July 18: Humphrey Keith, 55, was stabbed to death at his home on the 4600 block of U.S. Highway 280 in Harpersville. His girlfriend, Shonta Cohill, was arrested and charged with murder. The trial jury deadlocked in September 2014, necessitating a retrial. She agreed to a plea deal before that trial in February 2015 and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. (report)
  4. August 12: Emilio Alonzo, 25, was found dead with a stab wound after his car collided with a utility pole off U.S. Highway 31 near Valley Elementary School in Pelham. Investigators determined that the death was caused by wounds suffered previously at a bar fight. Pedro Edgardo Portillo, Jose Armando Erazo-Acosta, Fernand Landaverde-Caballero, and Oscar Adonay Alvarenga were arrested and charged with murder. Erazo-Acosta pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was given a split 15-year sentence with a minimum of 30 months in prison. Alvarenga, Portillo and Landaverde-Caballero pleaded guilty to third-degree assault were sentenced to time served. (report)
  5. September 9: Joshua Smith, 22, was one of 3 men found shot to death in a home on the 2400 block of Chandabrook Drive. Jon Ingram Staggs Jr was convicted of capital murder at trial before Judge Dan Reeves, and agreed to a sentence agreement for life without parole and without appeal. (report)
  6. September 9: Casey Cumberland, 22, one of 3 found shot to death in the home on Chandabrook Drive.
  7. September 9: Siumeon Gilmore, 19, one of 3 found shot to death in the home on Chandabrook Drive.
  8. September 11; Tremain Gates, Jr, 4-months, died at Children's Hospital from injuries sustained when he was allegedly thrown against the wall of his Calera home by his father on August 25. Tremain Vanteas Gates was initially arrested and charged with assault, but later charged with capital murder. He pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life by Judge Bill Bostick. (report)
  9. September 20: William David Moore, Jr, was shot to death at his home on the 1200 block of Shelby County Highway 26. His Hummer SUV was stolen and recovered by police in Jackson, Mississippi. Lamario Brown of Birmingham was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property. He died of medical complications while in custody in Mississippi awaiting extradition. (report)
  10. November 9: Daniel Watters, 28, was stabbed to death at his home in the Town Creek Apartments in Columbiana. Another man was wounded in the fight, but has not yet been charged. (report)

St Clair County

  1. January 10: Stacey Owens Gamble, 48 and Alexander Gamble, 49, were found shot to death in their home in Odenville. Investigators suspect it was a murder-suicide. (report)
  2. January 25: Karen Nicole McNair, 41, was shot to death at her home on Scott Drive in Moody. Her boyfriend, Jeffrey Morris Hamby, was arrested and charged with capital murder. (report)
  3. May 9: John Rutledge, 30, was found strangled to death in his cell at the St Clair County Correctional Facility. (report)
  4. May 10: Katelynn Arnold, 8, was found hanging from a rope outside her house in Ragland. Her 14-year-old half-brother was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison by St Clair County Circuit Court Judge James Hill. (report)
  5. June 20: Mavis Batson, 59, was strangled to death at her home in Moody. Her grandson, Joseph Paul Batson, confessed after questioning and was charged with murder. (report)
  6. June 27: Robert Wayne Long, 63, and his passenger were killed when their motorcycle was struck head-on by a pickup truck on U.S. Highway 411 near [[Bethel Baptist Church (Moody}|Bethel Baptist Church]] in Moody. The driver of the truck, Jason Stewart, was charged with manslaughter, but convicted in Judge Bill Weathington's court on the lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide. (report)
  7. June 27: Debra Garza, 60, was killed in the same collision.
  8. September 20: Donald Thomas, 83, was attacked and killed by two Rottweilers at the mailbox at his home in Leeds. His neighbors, Jerry and Jacqueline Lenton, were keeping a total of 25 Rottweilers at their home. They were indicted on charges of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in December and turned themselves in. (report)
  9. September 27: Rickey Shane Williams, 34, was allegedly tied to a car and dragged to death by his cousin, Jeffery Wayne Finney, Jr. Williams' body was found near his home in Riverside and his car was recovered in Renfroe. Finney was taken into custody in Pell City and charged with murder. (report)
  10. December 16: Cathy Harris, 39, died from injuries sustained when her car was struck at the intersection of U. S. Highway 231 and 19th Street in Pell City. Dannette Campbell Watkins was charged with manslaughter for recklessly ignoring a red light, causing Harris' death. (report)

Talladega County

  1. July 12: Matthew Paul Howie, 19, was killed following a robbery. One of his accomplices, Christopher Isaac Surles, was convicted of murder in August 2014 and sentenced to life in prison. (report)
  2. December 29: Ray Fednander, 67, was found beaten and stabbed on the porch of his home on Morris Avenue in Sylacauga. He was pronounced dead at Coosa Valley Medical Center. He reportedly whispered the name of his assailant before dying. Police have identified a suspect, but not yet made an arrest or filed charges. (report)

Tallapoosa County

  1. May 5: Kimberley Waid was shot by her husband at their home on Oak Hill Drive in Alexander City. He telephoned police to confess, and was killed during the subsequent standoff. (report)
  2. May 5: Charles Waid was shot by police in self-defense during a standoff after he reported shooting his wife. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident. (report)

Tuscaloosa County

  1. March 31: An unnamed female, 7, was struck by a pickup truck while walking on the shoulder of 5th Street in Northport near Kentuck Park following the Tuscaloosa County Airshow. Danny Ray Smith, 64, was charged with vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, and two counts of first degree assault. (report)
  2. April 12: The body of Grace Johnson, 50, missing since March 3, was found in an abandoned mobile home near Sanders Ferry Road. Investigators determined that she died from blunt force trauma and are investigating the death as a homicide. (report)
  3. May 15: Hunter Daniel Grissom, 28, was found shot at the Binion Creek Landing Park at Lake Tuscaloosa off Tuscaloosa County Highway 43. His ex-wife, Tracey Grissom, called 911 after shooting him and surrendered to Sheriff's deputies. She pleaded self-defense, but was convicted of murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison by Judge John England. She was denied an appeal based on a claim of ineffective counsel in May 2017. (report)
  4. August 18: An unnamed female, 73, was found dead in her home. Julius Ervin Cockrell, who reportedly confessed to her murder, remains at large. (report)
  5. October 15: Eddie Clark, Jr, 19, was stabbed to death when he checked on a domestic disturbance on the 6400 block of Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard in Tuscaloosa. Anthony Deon Davis, the suspect in the stabbing, was shot by another person and taken to Druid City Hospital for treatment. (report)
  6. October 21: Fredrick Townsel, 57, was struck and killed by a man driving a company vehicle without permission. Christopher Phillip Marcum was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries. He turned himself in. (report)
