2008: The inaugural Leeds Downtown Folk Festival was held in Leeds.
2007: The first John Henry Days festival was held in Leeds.
1974: Clara Verner Towers in Tuscaloosa was topped-out.
1973: Uriah Heep; Earth, Wind & Fire; and Tucky Buzzard played at Rickwood Field.
1964: The cornerstone of Vestavia Hills Methodist Church was laid.
1926: Edgewood held a special election to annex the unincorporated Grove Park and Rosedale Park areas and rename itself Homewood.
1897: 5 miners were killed in the 1897 Belle Ellen Mine fire.
1890: The trustees of Trinity Methodist Church (Southside) purchased property at 30th Street and Avenue F.
1887: John Henry competed in a legendary contest against a steam hammer.
1887: George H. Johnson shot John Yancey near the intersection of 20th Street and Avenue I in a dispute over an eviction, and also shot Birmingham Police Captain J. B. Donaldson in the ensuing confusion.
1863: Captain Goldsmith Hewitt II was wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga.
