2000: Compass Bank acquired Founders Bank of Arizona.
1948: The inaugural Dixiecrat convention, held at Municipal Auditorium, nominated Strom Thurmond as its candidate for President of the United States.
1934: State representatives of the United Textile Workers of America (UTW) voted in Birmingham to call a general labor strike statewide. It expanded into a national strike in August.
1908: A gun battle broke out during the 1908 coal miners' strike.
1885: A natural gas explosion in the Ellen Shaft nearly killed engineer Llewellyn Johns and his assistants J. G. Moore and William Faul.
