Revision as of 15:19, 15 August 2016

This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2016. It includes homicide cases occurring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.

61 homicides have been reported in the city as of August 15, putting the city on pace for 98 for the year. Based on the 2015 census estimate of 212,461 population, that would represent 46.1 homicides per 100,000 residents. Birmingham had 100 homicides in 2015 and a record low of 62 homicides in 2014. The recent record high was 141 in 1992. At this time in 2015 there had been 52 homicides reported.

The city has averaged 8.2 homicides per month, or one every 3.7 days. There were 10 incidents in January, 6 in February, 10 in March, 9 in April, 6 in May, 11 in June, 5 in July and 4 so far in August. The longest stretch without a homicide was the 18 days between July 3 and 21. Eight violent deaths were reported on Sundays, 9 on Mondays, 9 on Tuesdays, 5 on Wednesdays, 7 on Thursdays, 12 on Fridays and 9 on Saturdays.

Of the 61 reported homicides, five were ruled justifiable by prosecutors and two were police shootings of armed suspects following car chases. One death of a fetus, although chargeable as homicide under state law, has not been classified as such. The police department therefore acknowledges 53 chargeable homicides, one of which has been charged as manslaughter and the rest classified as murders. Suspects have been identified in 36 of those cases, apprehended in 33, and charged in 29. Charges in one case have been dismissed.

At least 47 deaths resulted from shootings, five were caused by stab wounds, one from blunt force trauma, and one from strangulation. At least sixteen homicides took place inside homes, twenty on the streets, six in yards, nine at apartment complexes, one outside a nightclub, and four at places of business. Twenty-four were reported in the West Precinct, sixteen in the East Precinct, three in the South Precinct and thirteen in the North Precinct. Eleven deaths were the result of domestic disputes, twelve others from ongoing grudges, one from a dispute over a dice game, one from a bar fight, two from police shootings following car chases, and seven others resulted from robberies. Forty-nine victims were male and ten were female. Two were unborn fetuses.
