1944: Elliott Dent took on a squadron of Japanese fighter planes and shot down three before being shot down himself, earning a Distinguished Service Cross.

2012: Coach John Lee Armstrong died in Birmingham.
2009: Former UAB Blazers basketball star Alan Ogg died from a staph infection.
2009: Art librarian Robert Kaufmann died in New York, New York
1979: An explosion at the Hercules Powder Plant in Bessemer killed one worker.
1976: Bail bondsman and former Klan Grand Dragon James Esdale died.
1934: A robber was killed and his partner wounded in a shootout in the lobby of the Redmont Hotel after being caught in the act by Birmingham Police Department detective A. C. McGuire, who was also struck in the arm by return fire.
1920: building contractor, mine operator, and philanthropist Belton Gilreath died in Birmingham.

2009: Jamie McMurray won the AMP Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.
2008: BSC won on the road, Samford was narrowly defeated at home, and UAB was soundly defeated in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
2008: Miles College lost 52-2 to Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee.
2005: The 8th Battle for the Bones saw UAB defeat Memphis 37-20 in Memphis.
