This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2023. It includes homicide cases occurring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.

52 homicides have been reported in the city as of May 19, putting the city on pace for 137 for the year. Based on the 2022 census estimate of 196,910 population, that represents a homicide rate of 69.6 homicides per 100,000 residents. Birmingham had 152 homicides in 2022, a record high. The recent record low of 62 homicides was set in 2014. At this point in 2022, 56 homicides had been reported.

The city has averaged 11.1 homicides per month, or one every 2.7 days. There were 12 incidents in January, 3 in February, 16 in March, 14 in April and 7 so far in May. The longest stretch without a homicide was the 13-day span between February 22 and March 7. 9 deaths were reported on Sundays, 6 on Mondays, 12 on Tuesdays, 9 on Wednesdays, 4 on Thursdays, 6 on Fridays, and 6 on Saturdays.

3 of the reported homicides have been ruled justifiable as self-defense by investigators or prosecutors, and 1 more was a police shooting presumed to have been justified. With the exception of those cases, the department acknowledges 48 chargeable homicides, 1 of which was charged as manslaughter. Suspects have been identified in 20 cases, arrested in 18 and charged in 14. A suspect charged in one death later died by suicide.

At least 45 deaths so far have resulted from shootings, 5 from reckless driving, 1 from child abuse, and 1 from unannounced causes. 7 incidents occurred outside at apartment complexes, 14 in private homes, 6 at businesses, and 25 on the streets. 28 deaths were reported in the West Precinct, 14 in the East Precinct, 1 in the South Precinct and 8 in the North Precinct.

2 killings arose from work-related disputes, 2 came during robberies, 7 were domestic-related disputes, 4 resulted from arguments between acquaintances, 16 appeared to have been targeted assaults, 1 was caused by child abuse, 1 victim was struck by return fire during an assault and another by a stray bullet during a dispute. 5 deaths were caused by reckless driving, and 1 resulted from a police shooting. The motives for 12 other deaths have not been made public.

43 victims were males and 9 were females.

In April, Voices of Black Mothers United hosted a panel discussion at Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with What About Us, Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr, and Jefferson County Schools mental health services coordinator Jeffrey Moore. Topics of discussion included mental health resources for families with children and reducing pre-trial release for suspects charged with gun violence.

"Solutions", a conflict resolution program for teenagers founded by Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic High School student Deon Arnold, hosted an even at First United Missionary Church in Wylam for National Youth Violence Prevention Week.

The City of Birmingham partnered with UAB Hospital and the Jefferson County Department of Health to launch a program under development for several years to intervene in cycles of retaliation by providing counseling and resources to victims of gun violence while in the hospital. The Offender Alumni Association was contracted to staff the program.
