Hurricane Frederic hit Mobile. The USSR invaded Afghanistan. Notable 1979 births include singer Norah Jones, actresses Claire Danes, Rosario Dawson and Kate Hudson, and football players LaDainian Tomlinson, Carson Palmer and Jamal Lewis.
