Referenda on constitutional amendment
Special election for Jefferson County Commission District 1
A special election was held to fill the vacant seat left by William Bell when he became Mayor of Birmingham. A runoff was held on June 22 with the winner taking office immediately. Many of the candidates also appear on the ballot for the full four-year term to be decided in the 2010 general election on November 2:
- George Bowman (D): 3,046 votes (21%), runoff
- Johnathan Austin (D): 2,802 votes (20%), runoff
- William A. Barnes (D): 1,678 votes (12%)
- Willie Hardley, Jr (D): 1,597 votes (11%)
- Orville Ifill (D): 950 votes (7%)
- Christopher Talley (D) 823 votes (6%)
