• The Birmingham Board of Education made repeated attempts to dismiss Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Craig Witherspoon, but a takeover by the Alabama Department of Education nullified those efforts.
• The Birmingham City Council missed its deadline to pass the 2013 Birmingham budget.
• November 5: Vestavia Hills converted from a mayor-council government to council-manager.

• January 9: The 2011 Alabama Crimson Tide football team secured its 14th national championship with a 21-0 win over LSU.
• March 13: Samford Bulldogs men's basketball coach Jimmy Tillette was fired by athletic director Martin Newton.
