Australian bushfires killed 173. Captain Richard Phillips of the Maersk Alabama was rescued after five days as a Somali pirate hostage. The spread of H1N1 flu was deemed a global pandemic. The New York Yankees defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series. A soldier at Fort Hood in Texas went on a shooting spree that killed 13 and wounded 30.
