Margaret Thatcher became prime minister of the United Kingdom. A jetliner crash at O'Hare airport kills 273 people. The Susan B. Anthony dollar was introduced. ESPN debuted. Hurricane Frederic hit Mobile. The USSR invaded Afghanistan.
